If we recently received news that on the other side of the pond, large technology companies such as Amazon or Meta, were modifying 100% remote work for a hybrid work model, now it seems that in our country, although there is still telecommuting, the trend is changing. In Madrid and Catalonia, where 32.8% of the country’s active population is concentrated, we see 43.1% of telecommuting (according to data from the Labor Report of the Generalitat Valenciana of 2022).
After the pandemic, the volume of workers in a telecommuting situation decreased considerably, experts argue that this is a measure that helps personal and professional reconciliation. According to data from the Circular consultancy published in May 2022, 68.89% of job offers (tech) were for telecommuting. In July 2023, the same type of offers fell to 56.94%. If we look at hybrid work, it has grown from 5.7% to 6.1%, according to the Flash telecommuting data 2022 report from the National Observatory of Technology and Society (ONTSI).
We will have to wait to see how the model change works, meanwhile let’s see the main advantages offered by telecommuting and hybrid work.
Telecommuting: A Leap Towards Total Flexibility
- Schedule flexibility: Employees can adjust their schedules to optimize their productivity.
- Access to global talent: Geographical barriers disappear, allowing companies to recruit talent from all over the world.
- Cost reduction: Both companies and employees can save on travel and office maintenance expenses.
- Work and personal reconciliation: Telecommuting facilitates the balance between work and personal life, which increases employee satisfaction and commitment.
Hybrid Work: The Best of Both Worlds
Hybrid work combines the best of both worlds by allowing employees to alternate between working in the office and working remotely. Here are some of the advantages:
- Improved collaboration: Working in the office fosters direct interaction, essential for collaboration on complex projects.
- Adaptability: Hybrid work allows companies to adapt to different situations, such as work peaks, without overloading the facilities.
- Organizational culture: Maintaining a connection with the company culture is easier with hybrid work, as events and activities can be held in person while retaining the benefits of telecommuting.
- Professional development: The office environment is ideal for professional development, as it provides opportunities for mentoring, informal learning and networking.
In summary, both telecommuting and hybrid work offer a range of significant advantages for employees and companies, not only for the main technology companies. The key lies in finding the right balance that adapts to the needs and preferences of both, thus maximizing the potential of the two modalities.
